East Jesus has no religious meaning at all. It is an Artist Colony out in well… East Jesus, as in “It’s way the hell out in East Jesus or, the literal Middle of Nowhere”
I’ve been wanting to go to East Jesus for years now but I truthfully was afraid. East Jesus is located at the far reaches of The Slabs; a Squatter Community “Built” on the old Camp Dunlap Army base out in the desert on the edge of the Salton Sea. The Slabs are a place where people go to get away from society and live “Off the Grid” (more on the slabs in the next post) The Slabs can be a scary enough place (Although it’s no where near as scary as it was years ago) So I really didn’t know what to expect. I mean would I find the bad end of a double barrel or would I be forced into an orgy by drug crazed hippie artists?
The truth was, none of the above…at all. In fact this place may give Disney a run for money as the Happiest Place on Earth. I was greated by a great guy who looked far more normal than I, and welcomed in and was told to enjoy myself. Which I did, I have to tell you, I was grinning from ear to ear the whole time. Was it odd? Well of course it is. But it was so free and open and fun. People just making art they wanted to make, make statements they wanted to state. No Traffic, No Social Media worries, Heck, No Power or Toilets. But just fun and freedom. Freedom to just be.
